American Red Cross (Watauga County Chapter)
On November 20, 1917 a group of concerned citizens convened to discuss and conceive the Watauga County chapter of the American Red Cross, in response to a nationwide campaign to elicit 15,000,000 members. That day, a petition for authority to form a chapter was signed.
The Watauga County Red Cross has continued throughout the years to contribute to the welfare of the High Country through blood drives, safety classes, disaster action teams, fund raisers, and other informative outreach programs. Red Cross month is celebrated every April through events such as the Women's Fair that was held in the spring of 2003, and the local girl scouts, boy scouts, and 4-H-er's have been included in area promotions. Food distribution for families in need have provided fruit and vegetables for several years in collaboration with the Society of St. Andrew, the Hunger Coalition, and the United Way.
